LULLABY OF THE LEAVES

With the coming of autumn we get to look back on a summer of great jazz all over the northwest, capped by Jazz at Newport. Photos of the artists from the various festivals are on our website, jsojazzscene.org in the Gallery section.

We also get to look ahead to more fine music coming up!  Check out the calendar in this month's Jazzscene, pick a night and a club, and know you'll hear some world class jazz right here in our local area.  For reviews of the clubs, log on to our website. We also have some new clubs opening up in the Portland area - check them out!

Looking even further ahead, February will be the annual Portland Jazz Festival, two weeks of music climaxed by your own First Jazz on February 25^th.  We'll be in the Hilton again, with headliners Donald Harrison, Jacky Terrasson, Glen Moore and the Portland State Jazz Band.  A mini-festival all in one room!  We're planning on a sell-out again this year, and don't forget to donate items for the annual silent auction.  This is our fund raiser for the year, and it's what enables us to provide scholarships for outstanding young jazz musicians.

For First Jazz, here's what you need to know.  As a JSO member you get first call on reserved seat tables.  We find that half our sales for this event are for ten-seat tables.  The seats are $50, and a table is $500 - but a table of ten is $450 for JSO members!  What you need to do is place your order soon - they do go fast, and the best tables go to those who order early.  To get your table you can call JSO at our new phone number, 503-228-Jazz, which is also the Portland Jazz Festival office.  Alternatively, you can get your tickets through TicketsWest.  Either way there's a nominal service charge. But to get the discount on tables you need to know the password!  When calling, or ordering, remember jsojazz.  Early notice and discount prices - another benefit for JSO members!

Looking just a bit ahead, we will have our semi-annual yard sale coming up on Saturday.  A different location this year, but we'll still offer fantastic buys on CD's, DVD's and vinyl.  The details are in this copy of Jazzscene.  Stop by, bring some stuff if you'd like to donate, and check out the bargains!
