Prez Sez! (August, 2005)

LOVE FOR SALE

For the love of jazz - buy a JSO shirt!  Or cap!  Thanks to the efforts of professional designer and JSO volunteer Nancy Barker (see her ad elsewhere in your Jazzscene), JSO has a new logo and new merchandise.

If you didn't get yours at Cathedral Park, check us out at Mt. Hood, the Tom Grant Reunion Concert or the Jazz at Newport festival.  Can't buy me love, but you can buy gifts for friends and loved ones, and support the jazz effort.  End of commercial.

More great music coming up, following on the heels of another successful Cathedral Park Festival.  This coming weekend we have a new look at the venerable Mt Hood Jazz Festival in Gresham on Friday and Saturday, with other events under their sponsorship in Gresham and Portland.  Great local musicians, and a great price - free!

It will be followed by the 9th annual Columbia RiverFest on  Hayden Island.  The Tom Grant Reunion Band, featuring JSO Hall of Famers Tom Grant and Dan Balmer, will perform.

Leading off will be another Hall of Famer, Ron Steen and friends.  Great food, outdoor setting by the marina, and in addition to great jazz - you'll be supporting JSO!  We'll be getting a percentage of the proceeds.  Come and enjoy - you'll love it!

The 8th annual Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival Aug. 26-28, brings some top talent to the area. See story on page 10.

In its second year, the Jazz at Newport Jazz Festival at the Beach Sept. 9-11 (can't call it the Newport Jazz Festival - that name's been taken for a couple of decades now) will also feature Northwest talent.  A great venue, and lots to do in Newport besides the music.  We'll be there, hope you are, too.

Now that I've got your attention with the musical stuff, here's a JSO want list that you might be able to help with:

1. We need an office space.  Room to store our merchandise, have an answering machine, maybe even large enough to hold meetings.  A nice tax write-off.  Let me know if you have any ideas on who we could contact to find a JSO home!

2. Post Office Liaison Officer.  Actually, we need someone who is in the downtown area (our PO box is close to Portland State) to pick up the mail, separate the good from the bad and ugly, forward stuff to the right people.  Can you help?

3. Volunteer.  Easy work, sell shirts and memberships, free admission to events.  A great way to get to know other jazz fans!

4. Author.  Grant author.  We need to score some foundation money to support jazz musicians, students and listeners.

5. Merchandise Expediter (or something like that!)  We'd like to sell our JSO shirts ‘n' stuff over our website (check out our website!), but need someone who could take the orders (over the internet) and mail the merchandise out.

6. Cash.  We can always use cash!  Send a donation, we'll love you madly!

Join us at our membership/board meeting, August 16 (third Tuesdays now) at Wilf's at 6pm - and enjoy Ron Steen afterwards.  Can't beat it for love nor money.

United we Jazz!
