About the artists:

Born in a small town in Karnataka, India, Kadri Gopalnath was introduced to classical Indian music by his father (a nadaswaram vidwan). But it was the vibrant tone of the saxophone that he heard in the Mysore Palace that captured Gopalnath’s attention. He spent the next 20 years mastering the nuances of Indian classical music on the foreign sax. He is today widely recognized as one of the very few Indian musicians accomplished at playing the Classical Indian ragas on the saxophone. Gopalnath has participated in the jazz festivals in Prague, Berlin, Paris, and Mexico and has performed at the BBC Promenade Concert in London. For his second Portland performance, Ms. Kanyakumari will again accompany him on the violin. Kanyakumari is an outstanding violinist and much sought after accompanist for many master musicians of the Carnatic style. In 1988, she set a record by playing the violin nonstop for 29 hours. Kanyakumari recently conducted an orchestra in Chennai, India, with 25 violinists playing in unison.
