Jazz Society Fundraiser FIRST JAZZ & Silent Auction January 27, 2002 The Benson Hotel Mayfair Room |
|
First Jazz 2002, the Jazz Society of Oregon's tribute to America's art form, is set for Sunday, January 27 at the Mayfair Room of the Benson Hotel. Headliners this New Year will be heralded alto saxophonist Bud Shank, whose August appearance at the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival was critically acclaimed in the national press, and pianist Bill Mays, a frequent and popular companion of Shank's and an accomplished artist in his own right. First Jazz 2002 will be Shank's second gig of 2002, after recovering recently from back surgery. JSO's First Jazz has been a tradition for decades. On the program this coming January, in addition to the Shank/Mays headliner, is the Mario DePriest Ensemble. Accompanying leader Mario's vocals will be Jof Lee on piano, Frank de la Rosa on bass, Ron Steen on drums, Thara Memory on trumpet and Rob Scheps on saxophones. A local high school jazz band yet to be named will open up the afternoon's music program. JSO also will stage a silent auction at the event. JSO members and jazz enthusiasts are encouraged to develop or contribute some ideas and items for the auction (See flier in this month's Jazzscene).
Proceeds from the silent auction go towards financing JSO's Education Fund. First Jazz patrons will be given ample time before the music starts to preview the auction items and offer their bids. First Jazz 2002 also marks the fifth annual presentation of a JSO Hall of Fame musician. This year's recipient is drummer Ron Steen, whose steady hand in orchestrating nightly jams over the years has inspired many a young jazz aspirant. Steen also will appear in the drummer's chair with the DePriest Ensemble. |
